In connection with a research project leading up to philatelic commemoration of the attempted secession by McDonald County authorities back in 1961, am looking for intact pieces of mail with the McDonald Territory Private Dispatch stamps, territorial visas or any other ephemera from the event. Hello Noel.. I have canoed your area years ago but never rafted. Is the water level good for this weekend? And is there any evening activites going on about town this weekend also? Thanks, from what I remeber your neck of the woods is beautiful! Admin reply: Water level right now is about average for mid-August, meaning you'll scrape bottom in places and may have to portage a bit here and there. If you are renting a canoe or raft from one of our local outfitters, they'll be able to advise you about water conditions when you arrive. If a float on any particular part of one of the rivers/creeks is too troublesome, they'll recommend other floats you can take on deeper parts of the Elk River. I don't know of any special events going on in Noel, but have fun this weekend anyway!   Added: August 9, 2009

I have been going down to Noel for several years (and my in-laws for many, many years) however, this past weekend we had a confrontation with a man (clearly drunk) who provoked my family to the point where I had to remote my 6 and 8 year old cousins from the area as it escladed quickly. Fortunately, nothing but talk between the two parties insued. I was wondering if you could direct me to a site for who handles the water safety patrol and a site for campground information. Thank you. Admin reply: Sorry you had a bad experience. Drunks just aren't as cute as they think they are. Glad to hear that nothing violent became of it all though (which is typical of drunks on the river - all blow and no show). The McDonald County Sheriff handles river patrols, and they are usually on the river on weekends. But of course, they can't be everywhere at once (nor would we wish them to be). You could contact them about your incident, but I can't imagine what they could do about it, since they weren't actually on the scene. Anyone concerned about their safety on the river might consider bringing a cellphone along in a good drybox. In an emergency, you can call 911 and give your approx. position (if you know it, and such incidents tend to happen near campgrounds anyway) and they'll dispatch officers to your location. However, just as in all situations in life, you can't expect police protection everywhere you go. Be prepared to protect yourself and your family.   Added: July 27, 2009
